Alive: Indwelt with the Spirit

Alive 4

Indwelt with the Spirit

written by Agatha Apolinario

Have you ever been turned-off?

Probably by some person in your life; they might’ve done some things that made your forehead crease and your head shake. We are all guilty of this whether we admit it or not.

This is probably the reason why a lot of us get conscious most of the time. Were afraid that we might do something that would cause people to judge us. We became conscious of our actions, hoping that they won’t turn other people off.

Who wants to be judged?

No one, of course.

God is calling us to help one another, and to watch one anothers backs. It shouldnt be like the Hunger Games where people bring each other down for personal gain. Instead we should lift each other up. God has called us to grow in Him together, to encourage, to speak the truth, and to help each other from falling to sin. This is what His will is.

Unfortunately, we often do them with wrong motives. We speak of Gods truth with people to prove that we know better than them, or that were superior because we know these things. We forget the real reason why were spreading His word. Other times, we may have the right motives but the wrong ways of doing it. It may not sound wrong for us, but to other people, we appear as cold and unloving—nothing like how God wants it to be. Because of this, they feel discouraged and turned-off. Instead of bringing them closer to God, were just pushing them away even farther.

God wants us to help each other. But how do we do it?

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
Colossians 3:16

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly

This verse is telling us that we have to dwell in His Word. Read and meditate, put it in our hearts.

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Luke 6:45

Like a shampoo bottle that wont produce toothpaste, we cannot produce things that dont dwell in us. Our thoughts reflect through our actions. If we let evil things conquer our hearts, only evil will come out of us.

This is the reason why we should dwell in Gods words. It will remind us of the following:

-    our own unworthiness because wellbe reminded that were just like other people and that we are not better than them nor are we superior because it is only God who is the standard of holiness and goodness.

-    Gods mercy and grace. This way, well be merciful and gracious to others as well.

-    Gods commands that we should not condemn others, that we should love and serve one another as He did to us, and His promises that we should not worry about the things that are beyond our control for He is always there for us.

-    Gods priority which is to reach out to those people who are lost. He asks us to remember that we should do this to make disciples and to share His truth, and that were not doing it to prove ourselves better, to make ourselves superior, or to look down on others.

-    Gods indignation that we shouldnt be hypocrites. Remember that we are like other people who sin, and that mere external behavior modification doesnt count in Gods sight. This way, well know that God is serious. Well know that this is something that we shouldnt take lightly, not even in the slightest.

When we let Gods teachings dwell in us,

…the way we reach out to people will change.

with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit,

Like what the verse stated, we need wisdom. We need the Spirit’s help in delivering His Word.

Our manner of speaking to other people matters. We shouldnt be intimidating and obnoxious. Like what the Bible says, we must be gentle, kind, patient, and forbearing. Speak with Gods teachings and let them dwell in us because it will bring forth a CHRIST-LIKE SPEECH AND CONDUCT.

…our attitude towards God changes.

singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

Life has many trials. You can bet that there will be numerous obstacles in your path. But if we stand by Gods teachings instead of complaining and being bitter, we will be filled with gratitude, which overflows with praises for God.

And that trial you call at the moment will turn into a testimony of how magnificent God is.

With these, let us ask ourselves…

“Do I allow God’s teachings to dwell in me all the time?”

“How do I reach out to other people?”

“How do I relate to God?”

“Am I thankful no matter what the situation is? Or do I complain and fill my heart with bitterness?”

Finally, let us all remember God in everything we do. Let us align all our words, thoughts, and deeds in Him. We should always know that whatever we do, however we do it should be nothing but God-glorifying.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Alive: Hope in the Resurrection

Alive (series break)

Hope in the Resurrection
by Daniel Carandang
written by Ana Andres

The highlight of the holy week is really about Jesus Christ’s resurrection rather than his death but the question still lies; is the resurrection really important?

The answer to that is YES, because if Jesus is dead then who are we worshipping?

JESUS IS ALIVE. Let’s take a look at God’s Word which reveals the evidences of Christ’s resurrection;

“After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
Matthew 28: 1-7

Here we see the first affirmation that Jesus has truly risen. The angel supernaturally rolled back the stone (as it takes two people to be able to roll the stone) not to let Jesus out, for He had a glorified body, but for Mary and the others to see that the tomb was empty and that indeed, Jesus has risen. Although the guards were deeply traumatized by the angel— guards who were tough looking, muscular men— the angel told the women not to be afraid as the empty tomb shall bring joy and must be made known to others.

“So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
 Matthew 28:8-10

And there, they received the ultimate affirmation that truly and indubitably, Jesus is alive.

Despite all these evidences, many people still contest the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The top 3 excuses of people who don’t believe in the resurrection are; 1) He merely passed out. This excuse is far-fetched as Jesus was intentionally positioned on the cross to restraint him from breathing. He was literally out of breathe! 2) A twin or a look-a-like died in His place. I don’t know about you but this just sounds utterly ridiculous. 3) Jesus’ body was stolen. Again, this excuse is far-fetched as the guards were very much on the alert as, if Jesus’ body gets stolen, they are to pay with their lives.

Ultimately, if you come to think of it, if the disciples knew that this merely was a lie, why would they give up their life standing for this truth? They all died a martyr’s death and I believe that no one in their right mind would go that far for a lie.

But so what, right? So what that Jesus resurrected? How should this impact us?

His resurrection impacts us greatly. Because of it, we can now have...

1. Hope in His Word

*verse on the prophecy of Jesus’ resurrection* (mali yata yung na-note down ko, Matthew 10:32-34? Pa -ask nalang po si Kuya Dan kung anong verse) Because this came true, we can now be sure that the rest of His word is true. We can rest in the hope of His promises and continue to trust His word and allow it to penetrate our lives.

2. Hope in this life

We have all been tempted, fallen short and sinned. This is because naturally, we are sinners and hence it takes a supernatural resolution to overcome this and that is what exactly God provided through Christ and faith in Him; He supernaturally took away our sins and supernaturally gave us the power to say no to sin and yes to life. Yes, He gave us that power but the question is whether we deny this power or we appropriate it. The word “power” originated from the greek word, “dunamis” which means dynamite.  Just like when a dynamite is used, when we appropriate this power, it’s something you can’t help but notice therefore you will see a difference in a christian’s life.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms.”
Ephesians 1:18-20

3. Hope for our future

“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
1 Corinthians 17-20

I’m pretty sure we’ve all had that notion that in order to go to heaven after death, we must have been “good” while we were living. If that’s the case, no one will ever go to heaven as the standard of good is the holiness and righteousness of God, meaning we must have NEVER sinned. As I’ve mentioned earlier, we all have sinned and fallen short but thankfully Jesus Christ took the penalty of our sins and through Him, we are made holy and righteous. Jesus is the first fruit of those dead to be resurrected. His resurrection precipitates and guarantees that all those who have believed and died will be resurrected again and hence this gives us hope for our future.

Resurrection and life is a person. When we have Jesus in our lives, we will be resurrected.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN IT?

Alive: Peace, Man!

Peace, Man!
by Alvin Lagamon
written by Ashley Petallano

Life will always be busy.

Everyday, we live as if tomorrow can't come sooner enough. With all the work, assignments, school and people, we can't help but feel exhausted once the day ends. Though we sleep at night, our brain whirls and works endlessly.

Even if we have come to terms and accept the Prince of Peace, there will come a time when we will want everything to just STOP.

Have you ever felt so tired that you just want to shut the blinds, close the doors and throw yourself on your bed for a week?

Peace is an element so desirable yet very elusive during most days. It's what we want. We then ask: "Is it possible to experience peace nowadays?"

The answer?

Yes. In Christ, it is possible.

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful."
Colossians 3:15

The ultimate and perfect peace only comes from God.

"Let the peace of Christ..."

We are assured of who God really is. The world offers us endless streams of worries but we musn't stress ourselves. We are weak humans. Our source of strength is God alone and if we have faith in Him, we know He will help us through.

But because we live in a world that discourages Christ, our peace in Him will be forever challenged. Here are the three factors that cause us to lose our peace in Christ:

1. People
2. Pressure
3. Pain

These 3P's are sure to give us head and heart aches, whether we like it or not. People can make us miserable, the pressure circumstances bear causes us to lose our heads and the pain that comes along is enough to break our hearts.

But with Christ, we need not fret!

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
John 14:27

"..rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to be peace..."

How do we experience the perfect peace of God?

When we obey Him and His Word, there is no doubt that His peace will transcend unto us and we will be relieved. So for us to experience this, we got to make 'PEACE, MAN!'

Make time for Him

"But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."
Luke 5:16

Jesus was a very busy man. Being the Son of God, He attended to matters here on Earth. His cleared calendar can be seen in Matthew 14, Mark 6 and Luke 9:
- Sent the disciples for ministry
- John the Baptist death
- Herod was looking for Him
- Disciples arrived
- 5,000 hungry (Mark 6:31)
"Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
- He was followed

Jesus did so many things. People followed Him everywhere. He preached, escaped His pursuers and taught His disciples. He did miracles. Despite His busy schedule, Jesus made sure He spent His time with His Father. Reading Jesus' story in the gospels show us that He was always connected with God, 24/7.

In St. Luke's Hospital, there's a sign that reads SILENCE PLEASE, HEALING PROCESS ON GOING.

In the very same manner, we can achieve peace if we quiet our hearts and sincerely talk with Him.

" Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:6-7

Align yourself to His Word

"Great peace have those who love your law,
and nothing can make them stumble."
Psalm 119:165

Always stay tuned to His Word. The Bible is our Life Manual, which assures us that if we follow what He says, we will stay aligned with His wills.

Nurture a thankful heart

"...And be thankful."

Rather than wasting our time moping and worrying about our problems, it's best to also remember how God has aided us through numerous situations. It's easy to forget to be grateful when we're caught in tight situations. No matter what's happening, it's best to maintain a thankful heart. Be thankful for everything and be assured that God is with you.

PEACE, MAN!

The peace of God is one that we should crave. It is perfect just as He is. It is one thing. However, we cannot receive this if we do not trust the Giver, if we do not know Him at all. A relationship with Jesus enables us to experience the unbelievable peace of God.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ
Romans 5:1
